To demonstrate, I asked ChatGPT to write a song about aliens. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great. Here are the results:
Mistake: Asking ChatGPT to write a song without any context.
Prompts like "write a song about aliens" might give you something entertaining, or it might not. But if you give it contexts, such as genre, tone of voice, and other constraints, it will get closer to giving you a better first draft. Still, it's probably best to think of ChatGPT as a first-draft machine, which you can use as a springboard.
Next, I asked Quincy Jones to critique the lyrics:
Prompt: Act as Quincy Jones and critique these lyrics.
Here's a critique of a different song. This time, I asked Quincy to critique the song viciously.
Notice how he caught the clichés and passive voice.
Follow that up with this prompt:
Prompt: "Act as a songwriter taking this critique into consideration, and then rewrite the song."
Here's the rewrite:
Here's another prompt to critique the lyrics, using Sheila Davis, the author of The Craft of Lyric Writing.
Prompt: Act as Sheila Davis and critique these lyrics.
Here's another example from a different song. This time, I asked Sheila to critique the song viciously.
Notice how she caught the mixed metaphors and inconsistency of rhythm and meter.
Again, I followed up with "act as a songwriter taking this critique into consideration, and then rewrite the song."
And here's the rewrite:
Use any of your favorite songwriters and music producers for feedback. But it might be more helpful to choose a teacher who has a large online dataset of songwriting advice for ChatGPT to pull from.
